So @Vikram, in the Android world, the word widget is basically a a generic term for a bit of self contained code that displays a program, or a part of a program, that is usually a shortcut to a larger application installed on your phone. You would have probably seen them if not on web pages, then definitely on your smartphone and would have probably never thought that you are seeing a widget. They appeared for the first time in the Android version 1.5 and are present in every Android version since then. App developers have done so many advancements in widgets, thus enabling us to do many great things with them and making Android experience without them pretty much hard to imagine.
You can see them in each and every size, ranging from a 1 - by - 1 shortcut to a full page widget, and each one has its own benefits. It's pretty common to see 1 to 2 widgets on the home screen of your Android phone. Most Android phones come with a few built in widgets, like calendar, weather, Google search, clock and many more. In this list, more third party widgets can be added depending upon what all applications you have installed on your phone as most applications now a days, provide their own widgets, which is like a shortcut either to their app or to a part of their app.
The world of widgets is full of adventure and exploration as new widgets come from time to time and the older ones just never get old! You can do a lot of things with these small shortcut like icons and you will be amazed to see their capabilities, which we often don't use to the full extent. Now let's talk about how to add them. Well, the process is literally a two step process and is pretty easy.
1. Long press at an empty area, that doesn't contain any app in its vicinity, on your phone's screen and you will soon see a few options. Click on the Widgets option.
2. Now you will see a list containing different widgets available on your phone. Select the one you like and drag it to the desired location on any of your phone's screen.
*** TIP: - YOU CAN EVEN CHANGE THE SIZE OF A WIDGET, IF POSSIBLE, BY LONG PRESSING AT A WIDGET AND THEN ADJUSTING ITS BOUNDARY.
I hope that I am able to answer your question, but if you still have any queries, then feel free to ask. And do check out the Instagram account of our site @draditech(https://www.instagram.com/draditech/) and do not forget to follow it.
You can also simply call them a shortcut to a particular app. But trust me they offer a wide range of features and are good for lazy people like me.
